His grandfather, Hormusji Framroze Punjabi, was a Parsi Zoroastrian from Peshawar who migrated to Mumbai; while his grandmother, Jerbanoo Punjabi, was born in Gujarat to a family of Sindhi Hindus who had moved there from Karachi during the Partition of British India in 1947.



John attended Bombay Scottish School in Mumbai and then completed his Bachelor in Economics from Jai Hind College. After which he worked as an investment banker with Merrill Lynch for three years. Despite being highly qualified for the job, he quit banking to pursue his passion for acting.
